Gillette was founded by the multi-talented author, inventor, and businessman, King Camp Gillette in 1901 as the American Safety Razor Company. By innovating the pre-existing Safety Razor to have disposable razorblades, Gillette produced a product the public wanted and was desirable for business interests.
The company’s product was nothing short of a revolution, both for business and the public. Gillette sold the razor holders as a loss leader, selling them for less than the production cost, while he made a profit on the disposable blades. Within 15 years of the company’s existence Gillette had sold almost half a million holders and 70 million blades.
The Gillette Mach 3 is a line of razors created by Gillette and introduced in 1998 . As one of the first three blade design on the market allows for a shave with less pressure to the skin and with fewer strokes, thereby reducing skin irritation. While many guys get a great shave with the Mach 3, some guys, depending upon skin and beard type, have experienced increased irritation or razor burn as the number of blades has increased.
Other razors in the Mach3 series are the Mach3 Turbo and the M3Power. All Mach3 series razor blades are interchangeable between the three.
The Mach 3 features three independent blades affixed to the head. The three blades move across the face for a smoother cleaner shave with les work than a single blade. The three blades are spaced so that one blade follows the other for a quicker and more efficient shave. As with all disposable blades, the Mach 3 lasts for about a week before you need a new one. I will say that I am also a frequent user of the Fusion [or Mach 5 as some call it]. In my humble opinion, the Mach 3 is a better overall blade. While you do not receive the benefit of five blades, the Fusion’s head is a little harder to rinse off and it is a little too wide for hitting some of the different sides of one’s face.
The Mach 3 does cost more than single blades [but around what other multi-blade razors go for]. Otherwise, it’s pretty much perfect.
The Mach 3 is to shaving what the iPod is to music /media players. While there have been many improvements [battery-operated, the Fusion] and imitators [the Quattro], the original is still the best. The three blades make for efficient shaving. The blades are spaced enough to shave the same area three times in one stroke. The smallish head works great for moving around the curves of one’s face. Being a cro-magnon kind of guy whose 5 O’Clock Shadow is more of a Noon Shadow, I have a great love of any product that makes my shaving smoother, faster, and fresh.
